Once ( I guess 16th century) a sanskrita patashala in Pune declared Sisupalavadha as the best of all works since it contains every lakshana of poetry and it was honored by carrying on an elephant. But Vadiraja Tirtha asked that the magha kavya be judged after comparing it with one another composition – Rukminisha Vijaya. He wrote each canto every day, totalling 19. The pundits scrutinized it and declared Rukminisha Vijaya as a better kavya in terms of poetry and for the fact that it has an “auspicious” title, as opposed to “vadha” which is inauspicious and honored Vadiraja Tirtha with the title “Kavi kula tilaka”. The point being that one of the lakshanas of a mahakavya is it should have a “mangala” title as opposed to “amangala” title.

There is also a work by Madhvacharya called “kAvya lakshana” which says how a kavya must be written.
